Eggs: to yolk or not to yolk, that is the question!
Health Benefits of Eggs
The health benefits from consuming both the yolk and egg whites far out weighs the concern for consuming too much cholesterol. Eating the whole egg provides an overall healthy cholesterol ratio.
List of key nutrients for eggs:
- Fatty acids – Omega-3, omega-6, saturated and monounsaturated fat
- Lutein – rich source found in the yolk and important for reducing the age-related macular degeneration of the eyes
- Minerals – Calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, zinc and selenium
- Vitamins – A, B6, B12, D, riboflavin, folate and pantothenic acid
Eggs are high in protein and are a good source for burning fat and maintaining optimum health.

Organic, Natural, Cage Free, Free Range Oh My!
The kind of eggs you buy at the grocery store does matter! There is a drastic difference in the nutrient levels from organic free range eggs from healthy chickens compared to eggs from factory farmed chickens.
Free range chickens are allowed to roam freely consuming a more natural diet. Nutrients for free range eggs includes; higher vitamin and mineral levels with a balanced omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio.
Factory farmed chickens are housed inside a dark building with no sunlight consuming corn and soy. These eggs will have lower vitamin and mineral levels with higher omega-6 and lower omega-3 levels.
Why is balancing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids important? Both are essential to control immune function, blood clotting and cell growth. Read more from Dr. Andrew Weil’s article. Your body and mind will thank you!
